چکیده

A new generation of observatories is looking for gravitational waves. These waves, emitted by highly relativistic systems, will open a new window for observation of the cosmos when they are detected. Among the most promising sources of gravitational waves for these observatories are compact binaries in the final minutes before coalescence. In this article, we review in brief interferometric searches for gravitational waves emitted by neutron star binaries, including the theory, instrumentation and methods. No detections have been made to date. However, the best direct observational limits on coalescence rates have been set, and instrumentation and analysis methods continue to be refined toward the ultimate goal of defining the new field of gravitational wave astronomy.

Searching for gravitational waves with LIGO

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors have reached their design sensitivity, and searches for gravitational waves are ongoing. We highlight current attempts to detect various classes of signals. These include unmodelled sub-second bursts of gravitational radiation, such as from core-collapse supernovae and gamma-ray burst engines. Gravitational waves from isol...

An all-sky search algorithm for continuous gravitational waves from spinning neutron stars in binary systems

Rapidly spinning neutron stars with non-axisymmetric mass distributions are expected to generate quasi-monochromatic continuous gravitational waves. While many searches for unknown, isolated spinning neutron stars have been carried out, there have been no previous searches for unknown sources in binary systems. Since current search methods for unknown, isolated neutron stars are already computa...

Gravitational Waves and the Maximum Spin Rate of Accreting Neutron Stars

Accreting neutron stars in the weakly magnetic Low-Mass XRay Binaries (LMXBs) are expected to be spun up near the breakup frequency ∼> 1 kHz in a small fraction of their age. The lack of observed systems above ∼ 600−700Hz has led to the suggestion that gravitational-wave spindown torque may be setting a maximum rotation rate. If true, searches for sub-millisecond radio pulsars will not be succe...

Detecting gravitational waves from accreting neutron stars

The gravitational waves emitted by neutron stars carry unique information about their structure and composition. Direct detection of these gravitational waves, however, is a formidable technical challenge. In a recent study we quantified the hurdles facing searches for gravitational waves from the known accreting neutron stars, given the level of uncertainty that exists regarding spin and orbit...

Search for continuous gravitational wave signals from sources in binary systems

We analyze the computational costs of searches for continuous monochromatic gravitational waves emitted by rotating neutron stars orbiting a companion object. As a function of the relevant orbital parameters, we address the computational load involved in targeted searches, where the position of the source is known; the results are applied to known binary radio pulsars and Sco-X1.
